Twitter to launch “hide replies” feature soon

Twitter has recently announced that it is going to launch a “hide replies” feature in its platform this year in June. The microblogging site said that the feature will be an experiment, and it could be changed or even removed from the platform based on the users’ feedback.

The hide replies feature is likely to spark controversy in the Twitter community, as it puts the tweet poster in control of which tweets should appear in the conversation thread. This in-turn could silence opinions in contrast with the post or other fact-checked clarifications. But Twitter believes that this feature will discourage people who enter conversations with plans of trolling and making hateful comments on them.

Twitter says that this feature will also encourage people to present their opinions in a more polite and less hateful manner. If you look at other social media websites like Facebook and Instagram, the users have far more control over their posts to keep trolls and abuses away.

Michelle Yasmeen Haq, the Twitter’s PM of Health said in a tweet,

“With this “Hide Replies” feature, the person who started a conversation could choose to hide replies to their tweets. The hidden replies would be viewable by others through a menu option.”



It shows that the hidden replies won’t be removed from the conversation entirely, instead this feature will make it difficult for users to view abusing content. Twitter also unveiled that they are launching many other features alongside “hide replies” function on its platform.

WhatsApp is testing a new security feature that will allow users to block conversation screenshots. In a new update for WhatsApp’s beta version 2.19.106, the messaging app has released two new features, a new Stickers, and Emojis tab and a fingerprint security lock feature.

The first very important security feature the app is testing is the ability to add fingerprint security. Filed under the Authentication head, WhatsApp will now let you lock your app with a fingerprint unlock function. But what’s new is that this new lock feature will allow users to block conversation screenshots in the app.

According to According to WABetaInfo, when the app is locked the users will be able to receive notifications and reply through their notification windows, but conversation screenshots would be blocked. The real downside of this feature is that it’s you who won’t be able to screenshot the conservation other users could take the screenshot of the app easily. It means you can either have a fingerprint lock security for your app or you can take the screenshot of your conversation.

It seems quite weird to have a security feature that instead of blocking other people to take screenshots, will block the user itself from doing so. But as the feature is in testing phase it is likely that WhatsApp will make updates in this regards.

The other exciting feature in the beta version is the new UI in the WhatsApp Doodle screen that now showcases Stickers and Emojis in different tabs. The stickers in this UI have been categorized by the type of stickers and emojis and also a new tab is added called “Favorites” where you can add your most used and favorite stickers by marking them.

Moreover, you now have the ability to search for the doodles in the app to help you decorate your pictures, GIFs, and videos with great ease.

The Indian government has ordered Google and Apple to block the Chinese-owned video sharing app TikTok from their respective stores after concerns were raised that people were using it for pornographic purposes and exploiting children.

Meanwhile, India is the largest user base of TikTok having around 120 million monthly active users in the country alone from the app’s total 500 million users worldwide. TikTok is quite popular in India as it has been downloaded over 230 million times in the country.

On April 3, an Indian court in southern Tamil Nadu state asked the federal government to ban TikTok, stating a warning about its potential misuse. Indian IT ministry sent a letter to Apple and Google to block the app.

Upon govt’s request, both Google and Apple have obliged and the TikTok app has been blocked from Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

On the other hand, a TikTok’s representative has denied to comment on app’s removal and told Reuters the company has “faith in the Indian judicial system,” adding that “we are optimistic about an outcome that would be well received by over 120 million monthly active users in India.”

The case in Tamil Nadu court was filed by an activist group which said that the app encouraged pedophiles and pornography. TikTok has been continuously drawn into controversy in India as the misuse of the app also led to the loss of lives in the country.

Facebook has admitted that it uploaded up to 1.5 million users contact list without their consent. The social media giant earlier this month was asking users to hand over their account credentials as part of the so-called registration process, but later admitted that it “unintentionally” extracted the contact details of around 1.5 million users without their knowledge and without ever asking their permission.

Facebook said that the issue started three years ago when it made some changes to the step-by-step verification process which users have to apply while signing up for an account on the platform. Before these changes were integrated into the system, users were also given the option to upload their email contact lists to help them find their friends who are already on Facebook.

But in May 2016, Facebook made a revision to the registration process and removed the language that explained to the users that their contact lists could be uploaded to the company’s servers during the sign-up process for an account. But the company didn’t realize that the said functionality was still operating, and in some cases, user’s email contact lists automatically uploaded to Facebook without their knowledge.

A Facebook spokesperson on this matter said that the company did not realize this was happening until April of this year. He said after finding out the flaw the firm stopped offering email password verification as an option for people who were signing up to Facebook for the very first time.


The spokesperson added,

“When we looked into the steps people were going through to verify their accounts, we found that in some cases people’s email contacts were also unintentionally uploaded to Facebook when they created their account”.


The company in a statement said,

“We estimate that up to 1.5 million people’s email contacts may have been uploaded. These contacts were not shared with anyone and we’re deleting them. We’ve fixed the underlying issue and are notifying people whose contacts were imported. People can also review and manage the contacts they share with Facebook in their settings”.



Facebook previously made a similar mistake where it stored hundreds of millions of users’ passwords on their internal servers in plain text.

Huawei mulls launching a 5G smartphone for 600 dollars this year and for next year, it will reduce the price to 300 dollars, as affirmed by Huawei’s chief marketing officer for wireless marketing, Peter Zhou in a recent interview with the Financial Times.

Zhao said that the Chinese tech giant will be selling 5G phones for 600 dollars in 2019 and for “next year, some people say we may see [5G] smartphones at 300 dollars and I think that’s very much possible.” With this move, the Huawei will be giving cut-throat competition to Apple which has yet to outline its plan for 5G.

Huawei’s chief marketing officer for next-generation networks also affirmed that the phones would not be less profitable product focused at supporting the group’s broader 5G business in telecom equipment. “It will be profitable. And by using 5G, more apps will be coming so people will be using more apps on their smartphones”, he added.

Zhao also revealed that some other Chinese phone makers like Xiaomi are also planning to bring a 600 dollars 5G phone to the European markets. However, doing so, they will have to sacrifice the quality of cameras, display, and speed. Meanwhile, Huawei’s product would be a fine amalgamation of quality, design, and processor in a decent price range.

Huawei, which owns the largest slice in telecom equipment manufacturing, last year dethroned the Cupertino giant Apple to become the second-largest smartphone maker. And now Huawei is aiming to beat South Korean phone maker Samsung in its own game.

Huawei’s wireless marketing head also indicated that currently, the smartphone industry is going through a race of affordable phones, not 5G phones. As he stated,

“Not many markets are still growing — there’s Russia, Indonesia, India. The 100 dollars - 400 dollars phone is where the real scrap is, in the low to mid-end.”

Where, Huawei Mate X, the company’s first 5G and the foldable phone is already live for sales in various markets, its price tag of over $2,600 is far from reach for consumers.

Samsung unveils 6.7-inch Galaxy A70 with a 32MP triple rear camera set-up

Samsung on Wednesday announced the launch of Galaxy A70, a premium budget phone with a 32MP triple rear-camera set-up, a 6.7 inch Super AMOLED display and a notch.

The phone will be initially released in India and after some time will be available in Pakistan. It’s no secret that Samsung has not been performing well in the budget category in recent time. In the last few years, Xiaomi and Huawei have dramatically reduced Samsung’s market share in the Asian market, more specifically in China and India. In order to regain its market share, Samsung is now updating its mid-range phone category to keep it up with the competition.

Premium Specifications

The Galaxy A70 comes with 6.7-inch FHD + Super AMOLED display, a differentiating factor which will prove to be a crucial factor for consumers when opting for mobile in the same price range category. In the processor department, Samsung usually goes for its own in-house Exynos chipsets, however, this time Samsung has decided to include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 675 processor with an octa-core CPU.

The A70 is also packed with 6GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage along with a micro SD card which can extend the internal storage to up to 512 GB. The phone comes with a massive 4500 mAH battery and 25W super-fast charging capability.

Flagship-like camera

However, the main attraction of this phone is the rear triple camera set-up which features a 32MP camera with an f/1.7 aperture which is backed by a 5MP depth sensor for capturing pictures with depth of field. The third sensor is an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. So all in all, its the same rear-camera set-up that Samsung is using for its flagship devices. Galaxy A70’s camera also supports features like slow motion and wide-angle video recording while the front camera supports AR emoji feature.

As always Samsung is always in the lead when it comes to providing a feature-packed with top of the line specifications, but will it be enough to stop the Chinese company’s overwhelming influence in India and Pakistan’s smartphone market? Only time will tell.
